Maison Mihara Yasuhiro: Spring 2023 Menswear

While you would think you were entering the aftermath of a fun-filled party scene, a quick peek around would actually reveal Maison Mihara Yasuhiro’s 25th-anniversary show. Brightly colored red and green confetti scattered across the floor, (and later the models) that gave way to looks that at a glance, were quite deceiving.

Mihara explained through a translator that “I think we are living in a confined world, where people are feeling suffocated. So, I wanted to relieve this atmosphere by expressing a falsehood, deception, or lie.”

This collection, titled Superficial You, embraced a sense of falsely led humor around the looks that paraded down the runway. Initially, what appeared to be a detailed dress with a large statement belt would reveal itself to be an optical illusion. Because, upon further inspection, it was simply a very defined, and detailed print. Mihara captured this unique deceptive nature in expressing that “I wanted to make a puzzle with this kind of falsehood.”

Standout pieces included a monochromatic skirt and open-back fringe jacket, a double-sleeved bomber jacket, and tee shirt displaying a distorted image of Warhol’s soup can with a rhino-shaped bag.

The true irony of this collection was best highlighted at the end of the show, as the audience scurried to their phones to capture the bubbles that began to cascade over the runway as every model walked with a bouquet of balloons. Ultimately highlighting the true, superficial.
