Man On The Move: The Canadian Tuxedo

Stefan Cooke Fall/Winter 2021

Denim-on-denim, also known as the Canadian tuxedo, symbolizes rebellion and is commonly associated with the greasers from the ‘50s. It can be a risky combination to pull off, but when executed properly, however, it can look trendy.

Stefan Cooke’s fall/winter 2021 denim-on-denim outfit is an example of perfect execution. The model looks like he’s on his way to buy a 25-cent Coca-Cola in the best way possible.

Style Advice: To be the Ponyboy Curtis of 2022, wear a black t-shirt ($25) from H&M, medium wash Blinder biker V2 skinny jeans ($315) from Hudson Jeans, a medium wash classic trucker denim jacket ($395) from Vince, white leather ankle boots with pointed toe ($149) from Zara and Sunglasses ($181) from Oakley.

Button up the jacket halfway so that there’s just a glimpse of the black T-shirt underneath. This helps to break up the denim and not make it too overwhelming. Also, wearing patterned denim jeans helps to distract the eye from focusing on all the denim. Finally, wearing a denim jacket with buttons instead of a zipper creates a centerline and makes the look appear to have symmetry which also tricks the eye into thinking the combination of denim-on-denim isn’t that odd.

Must-Have: Keeping to the theme of denim, Ralph Lauren sells a denim western suit jacket ($1,190). This jacket is perfect for casual Fridays at the office. However, while it may seem like a casual suit jacket, it’s produced with quality in mind. It’s made from cotton-and-linen denim that is handwoven in Japan. It’s also dyed with true indigo and tailored in Italy.

If you want to wear a whole denim suit, Ralph Lauren also sells matching denim slacks and a denim vest that are just as high quality.
