Man On The Move: Surviving Winter In Layers

Gabriela Hearst Fall/Winter 2021

So, there’s snow on the ground and you have to walk to work. You don’t want to wear anything too heavy in case of excessive perspiration, but you still want to dress warm. Therefore, to ensure a successful winter stroll you’ll need to layer. A good way to layer is to wear multiple tops with different necklines to give the outfit variety and also allow for you to easily shed garments and continue on your way.

Style Advice: Gabriela Hearst’s Fall/Winter 2021 line is the perfect example of layering and it can easily – and cheaply – be recreated with the following pieces:

Wear a white and blue Tartan plaid long sleeve ($225) from Vince over a beige muscle fit Turtleneck Sweater ($35) from H&M. Over the top of these two garments, wear a beige long line Cloth Coat ($234) from United Colors of Benetton. If you start to perspire during your walk, you can shed the beige coat and won’t have to worry about the outfit being too plaid as you’ll still be wearing the beige turtleneck.

For the bottom half of the outfit, put on maroon slim fit suit pants ($80) from Men’s Wearhouse and dark brown leather Chelsea ankle boots ($170) from Mango. The contrast of a light top and a dark bottom draws the eye upward and ensures you don’t blend in too heavily with any office buildings.

Must Have: Keeping to the topic of layering, a British outwear label named Vollebak pays homage to the history of the trench coat, which got their start in popularity during the first World War, by creating a state-of-the-art laser cut trench coat ($995). According to the Vollebak website, the trench coat was used during World War One to help soldiers and officers maneuver safely through the filthy battlefield. To honor its history of saving lives, Vollebak reinvented the trench coat using 55 cuts of a carbon dioxide laser beam. The beam cuts out and seals each part of the coat leaving natural raw edges so there isn’t any extra material or extra stitching.

The trench coat is waterproof, wind resistant, breathable, snag resistant and abrasion resistant. It’s perfect for a cold winter day or a humid spring evening.
