Dries Van Noten Fall/Winter 2017

What is seen in this presentation is a European twist on early 90s Americana. Replete with exaggerated proportions, except in this case the latter is an intentional diversion from a new standard, rather than a prolonged faux pas. The clothes have been stripped of the romantic appeal that is synonymous with Dries Van Noten. They have in turn been placed within the realm of pragmatism. The designer is diving into a new frontier of precision. The kind of precise that has a little something for every kind of guy, i.e. a V-neck sweater in an unassuming pattern coupled with a pair of cuffed boot cut denim and ankle high Chelsea boots. Followed by an overcoat with daisies, or a floral print dress shirt paired with jeans with plaid sewn on the thighs. What is most striking is how well the pieces lay on the models’ figures. Even when oversized the garments fit to a tee. It may be a glaring departure from the soft tailoring and mood normally imbued in his clothing. Noten still evokes an engaging response to apparel like none other.
