The Cut: Mini Afro

Berluti Fall 2022 Menswear

Everyone has unique hair, and with this comes a unique set of hair-care products that are utilized individually, to the users liking, if you will. In the case of coil-like hair, fragility, among the common course or dry hair are all facets that need attention, as well as tending to. From picks, to deep cleansers, hair masks, shampoo bars, lotions and oils to name a few, here’s a condensed selection of trusted hair care products for the mini-afro.

Afros are notorious for their shape, density, and most notably, their size. While we won’t exactly be going for Gerald Johanssen from Hey Arnold!, there’s no denying that man kept his dew straight. However, our focus will revolve around a tamer version of the comical afro, more akin to that of Family Matters’ Steve Urkel, for example.

For a frizz-free experience, you’ll want to check out the label.m’s anti-frizz line, more specifically their anti-frizz shampoo ($16) which is a lightweight nourishing shampoo meant to soften and reduce flyaway. Following that, Aveda offers the nutriplenish™ conditioner deep moisture ($41) a nutrient-powered hydrating conditioner with oils and plant butter.

Overnight, we’ll want to protect our well-conditioned and shampooed hair to ensure restoration and a consistent texture. ENSO provides what they describe as “the first smart mask” that adapts to each user’s unique hair damage needs; deeply nourishing, the Overnight Restoring hair mask ($58) is the smart hair-repair product with no silicones, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances. For final styling needs, the Pattern hair pick ($9) is an affordable and effortlessly slick design that is best used first thing in the morning for adding shape and volume.
