Balmain Spring/Summer 2018

The Balmain man has always leaned towards the tough, edgy side of contemporary fashion. No one is more Balmain than its own creative director, Olivier Rousteing, a symbol of youth, sexiness and savoir-faire and chiseled cheekbones to match. The brand conjures images of deep v-necks, skinny jeans and lots of attitude. Perhaps its not surprising then, that for this season, much of the same hard elements remain intact: frayed edges, military details and leather abound.

There was also a significant ode to Americana evident in the flag prints and western motifs like heavy fringe. But the collection’s magic centered on its jackets that were rendered in all kinds of sequins, chain appliques, contrast piping and intricate beading and embroidery. The look was then completed with simple black skinny jeans and leather boots along with the occasional backpack or weekender bag. Standouts included tuxedo jackets that weren’t your usual plain black number. The ones shown here would be a perfect addition to one’s next black tie benefit or gala. A white dinner jacket with black shawl with the sleeves rolled up worn over a white tunic and black skinny jeans was the standout look of the whole collection that combined the best of formal dressing and casual attire any man can adopt.
