Having emerged as one of the biggest trends of the men’s spring 2018 season, surf culture continues to make its mark on the runways of so many designers. The latest iteration comes in the form of Alessandro Dell’acqua’s spring collection for No. 21. In addition to literal prints of dudes in surfboards catching waves on a sunny day, there were also the typical sea-side motifs of tropical prints and Hawaiian flowers. Fortunately for Dell’acqua, the blatantly literal nature of this theme stops here. He incorporated other elements that don’t recall any beachy destinations but that do however look really nice. Contrasting coat parts such as a lacquered collar set against a madras print, as well as the uniformity of military touches combined with dainty florals highlight the designer’s modern sensibility and knack for the element of surprise. Glossy PVC jackets like the ones presented here are a great way to mix up a man’s leather jacket rotation. If the designer’s intention was to instill a nonchalant mood (the word was affixed across a plain sweatshirt), he succeeded in that aspect.
