Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2018

True to their Sicilian roots, Dominico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana never stray too far away from their bread and butter – beautiful, ornate clothes drawing upon intricately women Italian references. But as all designers know, in order to stay relevant, one must evolve with the times. And perhaps no one has done this more so than Dolce & Gabbana. The last couple of seasons have seen the label feature notable Instagram celebrities and vloggers alike walk the runway with their model counterparts. The designers are leveraging millions of social media followings, but not at the expense of creativity or design. Casting aside, this was another stellar, very ‘D&G’ collection of jacquard tailoring, sequined sweatshirts and luxe streetwear. A strong balance between the oversized and the super narrow was at play here, something for everyone between the lustrous suits in jewel tones and the slouchy hoodies in vivid textures. The recurring theme throughout the show was one of love, nothing groundbreaking by any means but particularly noteworthy for the brand which has faced some backlash and controversy the past two years or so due to the designers’ viewpoints. Love, it seems, conquers all, and in case you didn’t get the message, a giant heart sculpture was planted in the back of the runway, and was featured in a king of hearts motif displayed in playing card prints and embroidered in silk shirting as a small logo. Pouring their heart into this collection, quite literally, was a winning formula that will cater to millennials from all walks of life.
