Billionaire Spring/Summer 2018

For Philipp Plein, the German designer with a trademark brashness and penchant for ultra luxury, each collection seems to be a manifestation of his extravagant lifestyle. His company, Phillip Plein Group, bought Billionaire just last year but the effects are already evident from the first look. This season, Plein put forth a series of lavish outerwear rendered in crocodile leather featured in bomber jackets and belted trench coats. Suede cigar slippers and sequined dinner jackets conjured images of wealthy fine art patrons in their philanthropic charity environment. Indeed, it’s not difficult to understand who Plein’s muse was this season, or rather, who he envisioned this brand encompassing. Silver-haired foxes and older sophisticated men made up his casting, perhaps signaling who his target customer is for this particular label: A man past his fifties, financially able to indulge in life’s luxuries and take care in his appearance. A man who knows when to channel his softer side in neutral, monochromatic suits and loungewear, but one who is also in touch with his flashier side, hence the vibrant yellows, bold violets and bright turquoise making up the rest.
