Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2018
For a collection slated to be in stores during the warmer spring and summer months, there was an unusual amount of leather, outerwear and heavy materials present in Sarah Burton’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection for Alexander McQueen. And yet, there is still the familiar, which remains season after season. The eerie opulence and chaotic sense of beauty instilled from its late namesake founder continues to inspire awe and admiration.
For this men’s collection, there were several themes at play, each with its own story to tell. Traditional menswear elements such as the Prince of Wales check and formal tailoring were presented alongside a tougher exterior such as biker jackets and leather trousers with multiple zippers. There were also pristine, almost austere off-white silk tops in Broderie Anglaise with scalloped edges that exuded a peaceful serenity. Another batch included dramatic, artful masterpieces that seemed to be crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, particularly the finale jackets that sparkled and the floral jacquard topcoat that could very well have walked during Haute Couture week. Most men will gravitate toward the streamlined suits, double-breasted coats and clingy ribbed knits that are perfect for layering. Footwear was especially magnificent, with the studded sandals and combat boots alike both staples for any man’s wardrobe. A leather sleeveless vest/trench hybrid was particularly lust-worthy and has all the makings of the must-have item for next season.
