Arena: The Sports World is in a Frenzy Over NBA Contracts

Christmas came early this year for NBA players in free agency. A slew of unlikely players are receiving the most lucrative contracts in the league and some NFL standouts can’t help but mock the massive deals. 

Where is all this coming from? July 1 was day one of the NBA free agency madness and teams had no problem dishing out crazy amounts of money to secure a roster with playoff potential. The biggest news came from the Grizzlies who gave Mike Conley a 5-year $153 million deal, making him the highest paid player in the NBA. The man is impressive and he's the underdog everyone wants to root for. He's only 6'1, 175 and he can attack the basket with full force. He is usually on the "The top 15 Point Guards in the NBA" list on most sports sites. I like Conley as much as the next guy, but he has never even been an All-Star throughout his 9 year career in the NBA. It wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison, but if we look at the difference in deals between the highest-paid players in both leagues, it is shocking. Andrew Luck signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts this year that set new standards for QBs. His 6-year $140 million deal makes him the highest-paid player in the NFL. He has already become one of the best players in the league in just three seasons and in 2014, he lead the NFL in passing touchdowns. Luck has lead the Colts to three playoffs, with two division titles and has three Pro Bowls under his belt.

Will there be a Spartan like fight-till-the-death rebellion from the NFL? Probably not. I don't see an NFL lockout coming any time soon, but in the meantime, NFL players are currently entertaining their toddlers to develop a lethal three point shot.
