Femme: Imaan Hammam

The beauty of our global culture is that it grants visibility to people from all over the world. It is especially wonderful because that culture gave us our woman of the month Imaan Hammam. Imaan is a Dutch model of Moroccan and Egyptian descent who works all over the world.

Imaan was discovered by CODE management back in 2010 when she was only 14 years old. It was a story as classic as any ever told. Imaan was walking in Amsterdam's Central Station where she was noticed by a modeling agent.Just like that, she was plucked from the crowd and thrust onto the world's stage as a model.

As a young model, Imaan has already racked up an impressive amount of achievements. She is only 21 years old, and yet she has appeared in consecutive issues of the American, Italian, and French editions of Vogue. Not only that but she has graced the coveted September issue of Vogue.Insiders know that the September is the most important cover of the year, and the fact that she was able to secure it at such a young age shows that she has really captured the eyes, and imaginations, of the fashion elite.  Esteemed fashion kingmaker, and Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour is a big supporter of Hammam. Wintour gave the model a shout out by name in Vogue's editor’s letter. This letter was published alongside Imaan's first appearance in Vogue magazine.

One can easily spot why Imaan Hammam is a model simply by looking at her. She has a multicultural background and she looks it. Most notable she has this amazing thick black hair. I’m not the only one who thinks so. Glamour and Vogue magazine both ran entire pieces devoted to her hair and how much they love it. It’s easy to see why. Imaan wears her hair natural in a number of ways, so it stands out in stark contrast to the majority of models who have straight hair.

Imaan is also a proud Muslim and middle-eastern woman. She is providing a nice bit of diversity to an industry that could frankly be a bit “similar.” Imaan herself understands the importance of diversity and inclusion. Speaking to Allure magazine she said “I’m half Moroccan, half Egyptian, and I was born in Amsterdam. I’m Muslim, and I’m super proud of my heritage and of my roots. I want to be a role model for young girls who are struggling with racism or struggling with their looks or with their skin color. I had Naomi Campbell, who I looked up to as a black powerful woman. But there aren’t many Arabic models, and being an African-Arabic model, I’m trying to open doors for more Arabic girls.”

It would be easy to dismiss Imaan as just another pretty face who happens to stand out from your typical model look, but that would be selling her short. She has given a lot of thought about her post-modeling career, and how she can leverage her current life into the next stage of her life. She's a forward-thinking woman and has already decided to pursue one of her other passions in life. A fact about Imaan is that she is a self-professed full blown sneaker head. So much so that she has decided that she wants to start her own trainer's company after her modeling career ends or slows down. Of course, there is no reason to believe she will have anything but a long career ahead of her. One needs only to look at her previous accomplishments to see that she has a bright future ahead of her.

Why she's hot?

Imaan Hammam is hot because she embraces her natural beauty and her heritage.

What kind of man does she like?

She is dating Naleye Junior, a successful model in his own right.

Something you should know...

You should know that she didn’t always love her hair. Growing up she used hair straighteners all the time.
