Femme: Hailey Clauson

Most women at 22 are leaving college and taking the first steps toward their career goals. At 22, Hailey Clauson is a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and the new “IT” girl of the fashion world.

Clauson’s entire story reads like a fashion fairytale. She was plucked from obscurity at an open casting call where she was signed on the spot. She was only 14 when she started her modeling career. In the intervening years, Clauson has modeled for everyone from Calvin Klein to Gucci to Agent Provocateur. Clauson herself summed up the experience the best, calling her career “surreal." She recently crossed over from being a model to a “supermodel” all thanks to one magazine cover.

The cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition is one of the great signifiers of the mainstream modeling industry. It is a thing that most every model would want to achieve. The cover is a sign you have made it. It is the fashion world equivalent of winning a Grammy or an Oscar. Over 50 models have graced the cover of the magazine. It has been a rite of passage for many iconic supermodels. Tyra Banks was a Cover Girl at 23. Christie Brinkley was 25. Hailey Clauson was 20 was she was on the cover.

Clauson has the looks of the classic All American girl next door. She stands at a very impressive five foot eleven, which no doubt helps her in cutting such a striking look. Clauson's good looks only make up a fraction of what makes her special. Despite living her teenage years in front of the camera, Clauson maintains a down-to-Earth attitude. Her personal blog showcases her interest and passion for art and photography.

More surprising is Clauson's keen sense of humor. Earlier this year, in February, she teamed up with comedy giant “Funny or Die” to star in a sketch. The sketch deals with a fan that gets a little more than he bargained for when he comments on Clauson’s Instagram. The entire sketch is hilarious and shows how well Hailey can use her natural good looks for a comedic purpose.

Clauson's dreamy good looks belie the fact that this young model has experienced a number of controversies already. In August of 2011, Clauson’s parents filed suit against Urban Outfitters over a tee-shirt they were selling. The shirt depicted Clauson sitting astride a motorcycle. Clauson and her parents were suing because the photo was being used without their consent. She was only 15 at the time and her parents felt that the photo was far “too salacious” to be used. The suit was settled out of court in 2013.

The second controversy was something much less dark. In the fall of 2011, a 15-year-old Clauson walked in a DKNY show. What was the problem with that? Earlier that year the laws changed and raised the minimum age of runway modeling to 16 years of age. Clauson addressed, and brushed off, this controversy in an interview earlier this year stating “[The CFDA] had changed the age and I didn’t know,” she says. “I was just working. But yeah, it was a bit of a controversy.”

Hailey Clauson is our Woman of the Month for a number of reasons. The most important being that she is a young woman in one of the most competitive industries in the world and she is not only surviving, but thriving in it. She does this with a mixture of professionalism, good humor and intelligence.

What makes her hot: Her classic All American good looks combined with that Girl Next Door appeal.

What type of man does she like? Hailey has been dating fellow model Julian Herrera since at least 2015. In addition to being a model, Herrera is also a boxing instructor and personal trainer.
