Femme: Ashley Graham
Being labeled a Woman of the Month, whether it be this publication or another, isn’t something that should be earned by simple financial feats or jaw dropping looks. This is a title that should be given to an individual that represents something more for all women. This month’s pick for Woman of the Month is no exception, as she has opened doors for ladies all around the world.
Ashley Graham didn’t grow up in an exotic corner of the world like our former picks. Instead, she was born in raised in the heart of the United States in Lincoln, Nebraska. Modeling isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Lincoln, where farming and football are a way of life. She grew up to a modest upbringing, being the oldest of 3 girls. At the age of 12, Graham went for a trip to the mall in Omaha with her father, where she was spotted by a talent agent from the I & I Modeling Agency. Despite what many in the industry deemed limitations, her career took off rather quickly. At 5’9, she was much taller and even larger than what most agencies desired. However, this would prove irrelevant as her career would only benefit from this in the long run.
In the early 2000’s she took mainly modest modeling positions with various agencies, not making her first magazine cover until 2007, where she scored a profile in Vogue. Soon thereafter Graham began receiving recognition for her work as a prominent and successful plus size model. This earned her a spot in Glamour magazine in 2009, where she was featured in an editorial titled ‘These Bodies Are Beautiful In Every Size.’ In 2010 she found herself in a bit of controversy when she did an ad for Lane Bryant commercial. The ad was deemed too racy and too hot by various news outlets, and was quickly banned. Graham was now taking headlines away from some of the more popular models out there.
The controversy only garnered more attention for Graham, as she found herself heading a Levi campaigns for jeans throughout 2011. It was this gig that earned her enough of a catalog to get work from Target, Bloomingdales, and Nordstrom. 2016 marked the year Ashley Graham’s name broke into the mainstream, when she became the first plus sized model to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The cover of SI is the epitome of fame in the modeling world, right up there with the Victoria Secret Fashion Show. After this point, Graham would be praised as a champion of the modeling community, proving that plus-sized models can make it in this industry.
This is one of the main reasons Ashley Graham is our Woman of the Month. Not only is she one of the most successful models out there right now, but she is a role model for all woman in todays world. In today’s society many girls feel like they have to look or feel a certain way when it comes to their body. Ashley is someone who helps break that mold and can inspire any girl. For that reason, she is one of the most influential women to top our list.
