10 Artists Who Were Overlooked For a Grammy Nomination 2017
With the 59th Annual Grammy Awards airing tomorrow I thought we would take a look at those who were overlooked for nominiations this year, as there are over 80 catogeries this year there is bound to be someone not getting the recognition they desever but some of these oversights are to big to be forgiven.
Drake: "One Dance" (Song of the Year): Drake had a big year in 2016 and his track One Dance was a large part of this success, it was placed at number three on Rob Sheffield's list of "50 Best Songs of 2016" in Rolling Stone. One Dance" reached number one in 15 different countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, becoming Drake's first number-one single in all 15 countries as the lead artist. Even with these accolades he still was snubbed for any recognition from the Grammy committee this year but I believe One Dance will be the peoples champion.
David Bowie “Blackstar” (Best Album): This album was David Bowie’s last masterpiece and although the album has received nominations for Best Rock Performances, Best Rock Song, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Package and Best Engineered Album, non-classical I still feel that he should have been nominated for top honors instead of being confined to his genres.
The 1975: "I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It" (Best Alternative Album): The second album from the Indie rock outfit was received well by both fans and critics, and set a record for the longest album title to ever hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. This is a great album that didn’t go completely unnoticed as it received a nomination for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package but I still feel it should have been at least nominated for best alternative album.
Justin Timberlake: "Can’t Stop The Feeling" (Record of the Year): A few years ago, The 20/20 Experience was ignored in the major categories by the Grammy committee and this year it seems nothing has changed, the number 1 hit “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” didn’t receive the record of the year nomination I feel it deserved and on top of that it failed to show up anywhere in the pop categories. The song did get nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media but it deserved better.
Margo Price: "Midwest Farmer’s Daughter" (Best Country Album): Margo Price had a great year with her debut album “Midwest Farmer’s Daughter” bringing a bit of an RnB sound to the country scene gave a great overall effect but some of her more controversial lyrics throwing shade at the Nashville music scene may have hindered her radio play. Regardless of how good her music was she received no nominations this year which I believe is a shame as she a least deserved a nomination for Best Country Album.
Selena Gomez: "Revival" (Best Pop Vocal Album): Selena Gomez really came into her own as an artist with her 2016 album Revival. With breath-taking ballads in the form of “Sober” and interesting features on “Good for you” all help make this album one to remember but alas it didn’t manage to score the ex-Disney star a nomination in any categories which to me seems like a massive oversight.
Ariana Grande: "Into You" (Song and Record of the Year): Ms. Grande’s 2016 album Dangerous Woman wasn’t the best, although it has it moments it wasn’t anything special as a full album. One of the stand out songs in this album was “Into You,” ending up being one of the catchiest songs of the year. She deserved at least a nomination in the Song and Record of the Year categories.
Beyoncé: "Daddy Lessons" (Best Country Song): Okay, so maybe Beyoncé’s name doesn’t look right on this list but just because she has been nominated 9 times that doesn’t mean her other work that fits other categories shouldn’t be considered. Although Queen B’s bread and butter has become Pop Music Daddy Lessons has the heart and bones of a country song and in my mind is worthy of a nomination in the best country song category.
Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift: "This is What You Came For" (Song of The Year): Rihanna has a total of 8 nominations this year and none of them where for the massive EDM tune “This is What You Came For”, although she took the main vocals on the song it was originally wrote by ex-love birds Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift who have a combined 0 nominations this year which I feel is a big mistake. This was a widely popular song when it was released which is why I don’t understand why it was snubbed for Song of The Year.
Kendrick Lamar: "Untitled Unmastered" (Best Rap Album): It seems like no one wants to talk about the fact that the life of Pablo is in this category and Untitled Unmastered is absent… Kendrick and Kanye aren’t in the same league and for him to be up for a nomination without Kendrick is ridiculous, it was received well by critics, and fans loved it what more could you need to receive an nomination.
